As we gear up for the holiday season, it's important to remember the heart and soul of our local economies – small businesses. One way to show our love and appreciation is through Small Business Saturday, an annual shopping event that's gaining momentum across the country.
During my tenure at the local Chamber of Commerce office (Rhonda speaking), I orchestrated a "Small Business Saturday" promotion in collaboration with our community's entrepreneurs, with invaluable support from American Express. Since that meaningful experience, this cause has held a special place in my heart. Year after year, I make it a personal mission to give extra care and attention to the wonderful businesses that surround me, especially as we approach the holiday season. When is Small Business Saturday? Mark your calendars – Small Business Saturday falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which means it's the perfect opportunity to transition from the turkey coma to some guilt-free retail therapy. In 2023, that day is November 25th, so be sure to set your alarm and grab your shopping bags! How did Small Business Saturday get started? Small Business Saturday began in 2010 as a grassroots effort to support local businesses during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. American Express played a significant role in its creation, launching the "Shop Small" initiative to encourage consumers to spend their dollars at local establishments. It quickly caught on, and now it's a nationally recognized event with communities and businesses across the country participating. I strongly suggest contacting your Chamber and encourage they sign up to be a Champion Community through American Express. In the past, I received a bunch of "Small Business Saturday" swag that we used in promoting this special day. How can you support small businesses this holiday season?
Small Business Saturday is an excellent opportunity to champion the entrepreneurs, artisans, and business owners who pour their heart and soul into their work. By choosing to shop local, you not only find unique gifts and services but also help to ensure the prosperity of your community. So, this holiday season, let's remember the little guys and gals that make our communities special and vibrant.
